ELIZABETH -- ShopRite of Garden
State Pavilion in Cherry Hill and ShopRite of Roosevelt Boulevard
in Philadelphia, Pa., made a strong showing in all four categories as the
"Best of Kosher Philadelphia" in the stores/butchers section of the
recently released 2006 Philadelphia Area Kosher Community Survey. The
survey was the first of its kind in the area.
The Cherry Hill store earned winner status for its
service quality, selection, quality of fresh and prepared foods, and
price, and was a runner-up for its store environment
(decor/appearance/cleanliness), while the Philadelphia store was a
runner-up for its selection, quality of fresh and prepared foods, and
price.
More than 150 consumers participated in the
poll, which was conducted by Silver Spring, Md.-based Kosher Community
Surveys, LLC.
Other local supermarket retailers singled out in the
survey were Norristown, Pa.-based Safeway division Genuardi's, which
won for store environment; and recent Supervalu acquisition Acme
Markets, based in Malvern, Pa., which won for quality of fresh and
prepared foods. Both Genuardi's and Acme were runners-up for service
quality.

SAN LEANDRO, CA. — Like many
other youngsters in the 1950s, Harry Manhoff pored over comic books and
grew to regard Superman as his hero.
As the New Jersey kid grew up, and attended Yale University and
Hebrew Union College, the comic books got tucked away with Manhoff's
New York Yankees sports cards.
Fortunately, or maybe unfortunately, his mom wanted to treat
the neighborhood kids to the same vicarious experiences young Harry had
enjoyed. So the paper products featuring Superman, Mickey Mantle and
Yogi Berra fell into other hands.
A funny thing happened about 15 years ago, when Manhoff — now
rabbi at San Leandro's Temple Beth Sholom — was looking for an activity
to share with son Eitan.
He rediscovered comic books and, with them, new insight into his Jewish heritage.

LIVINGSTON (JTA) – The first graduating class at the
Hineni school here might have been small, but it still represented a
milestone for the institution, which serves Jewish children with autism.
Founded in 2002 and with a current enrollment of 11 students ranging
from ages 3 to 12, Hineni is one of the only schools in the country for
Jewish autistic children.
Because they are small and have
problems qualifying for federal funds, Jewish schools have particular
difficulties helping special-needs children.
But as the June 15 ceremony at Hineni demonstrated, the rewards can be great.
The 20-minute ceremony featured a brief video about Hineni, the
presentation of diplomas and a short musical performance by students in
the school, which is a branch of the Sinai Special Needs Institute. The
Sinai institute consists of eight schools in New Jersey serving Jewish
children with learning and developmental disabilities.

WATERFORD, CT -- For
Judi and Stuart Deglin, the bat mitzvah of their daughter, Hanna, on
Saturday at Temple Emanu-El in Waterford was a moment of singular,
parental joy, and also of bittersweet peace in their hearts, as it
undoubtedly was for all who know their family story.
A few months earlier, in the same sanctuary, the Deglins observed the yortzheit,
or anniversary of the deaths — and this was the 10th year — of their
two children, Samantha and Randy, killed while crossing a street in
Norwich on Jan. 9, 1997.
Samantha Deglin, age 17, and her
brother, 11, died after being struck by a car as they were walking
across Washington Street, near Norwich Free Academy, after leaving a
play rehearsal at the school late on a winter's afternoon. They were
the Deglins' only children.
